Wahe Guru, a little meaning behind the yoga of sound

*Wahe (Wha-hay) means “Wow” or “Ecstacy.” It’s sort of an exclamation of the joy of existence. Guru (goo-roo) means that force which brings one from darkness into light.

‘Gu’ means darkness and ‘Ru’ means light. So Gu-Ru is basically the transformation from dark to light, which is why we have associated the word with ‘enlightened’ or masterful individuals. We call someone a ‘guru’ when they have mastered their profession or area of expertise. However these words are so much more than simply a title or an idea. By speaking or chanting the word one creates the sound vibration, which awakens the force of the guru in all of us. Some consider this the higher self. It’s the perfect and complete version of yourself informing you in every moment. Speaking the words Wahe Guru will create a vibration which will dispel darkness from you and bring you into the light of your Soul. Another way of looking at it is that chanting the mantra is like dialing a phone number to your higher self.

These words are in the Gurmuki language, a derivative of Sanskrit developed specifically for spiritual practices-its sacred sounds make up many mantras. In Gurmuki the phonetic sounds create a vibration that is closest to the actual meanings that the symbols convey.

In other words ( pardon the pun) the sound vibration is so like the actual thing that the symbol is meant to convey, that by saying or chanting it, you get a physical experience of what it means.

For example Wahe Guru is another way of expressing the joyous ecstasy that comes from knowing your true essence– call it God, call it soul, call it Self… whatever. Making the sound puts it into the mind’s vibration and like a seed planted, eventually it blossoms and what you get is the experience. Again, this is the essence of Naad Yoga or the yoga of sound current.

Wahe Guru is an expansive combination of words, which means much more than the simple four syllables it appears to be. It’s an expression of awe at all of creation and our participation in it. As you can see, it’s taken many words in English to even try to define it. Thus is the power of the sacred sounds of Naad Yoga-the yoga of eternal sound current.

  1. I have been listening to this chant by SatKrini Kaur Khalsa from her album ‘Lightness of being’ for the last couple weeks and this morning my mom told me that she heard me singing it in my sleep during the night. I’d never looked into the meaning of the chant, I just knew that it felt good hearing and singing it, so this morning I googled it and came upon this page. This is the first time I am leaving a comment on a post, thank you for being a part of my enlightenment. My soul resonates to this truth. Namaste!

  2. Wonderful. Best wishes for your upcoming spiritual growth.
